The traditional lunch concert presented by UMO, Savoy Theater and Presto digs into classics of big band jazz.
Duke Ellingotn, the most significant of all big band jazz composers, continues to tirelessly warm and illuminate the hearts and minds of music fans throughout the decades. Ellington and his brilliant songwriting partner Billy Strayhorn created an oeuvre of classics and delicious obscurities that UMO hungrily digs into for this lunchtime matinee.
Jouni Järvelä leads the orchestra. Duration: 60 minutes, no intermission. Lunch is served at Presto bth before and after the concert, from 11-12 and 13-14. FREE ENTRY!

Afternoon programme of Sibafest.
What do management and jazz have in common? Patrick Furu, Assistant Professor at the Hanken Swedish School of Economics in Helsinki and Lecturer in Arts Management at the Sibelius Academy, talks about jazz in management. Furu has used jazz ensembles as a management teaching tool around the world, from Singapore to New York and from Moscow to Lapland. When a management team works like a jazz band, it can achieve incredible results! An actual jazz band provides demo material at this lecture.

Turku Jazz Orchestran big band -sävellyskilpailun finaalikonsertti,Logomo, Logi 3, turku3.2. At 19:00
The final concert of Turku Jazz Orchestra's very first Composition Competition at Turku's Logomo.
Composer-saxophonist Kimmo Gröhn is behind two finalist pieces, ”Blues For Her” and ”Four Phases of a Martian Moon”. Hailing from Mynämäki, Gröhn began his career in the ranks of Pori Big Band and is currently a member of Turku Jazz Orchestra. Turku native, today a Sibelius Academy student, pianist Henri Lyysaari was the second composer to qualify for the finals with his piece ”Luotain”. The fourth finalist is the Paimio-based chamber and big band composer Pertti Jalava with his piece ”Lähtö 23:45 laiturilta 6”.
The winner will be selected after each piece has been performed live by Turku Jazz Orchestra. The sagacious jury is composed of Teosto-winning jazz artist Mikko Hassinen, Jussi Fredriksson, the President of the concert series Flame Jazz, and Severi Pyysalo.
The audience will have a chance to vote for their favourite piece, too.
Duration of the show 2,5 hrs (including interval). Doors open at 6:00PM.
