Dalindèo is a Helsinki-based jazz sextet founded by composer/guitarist Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen in 2003. Their music is a cinematic jazz reminiscient of the ambience of movies by Aki Kaurismäki mixed with a Tarantinoesque vibe of danger and suspense. With musical influences ranging from Duke Ellington's swing jazz to surf guitars à la Dick Dale, all in a setting inspired by Finnish popular music from the 1950's, Dalindèo have created a contemporary Finnish jazz style of their own. As a live act Dalindèo has gained a reputation as a tight and energetic performer.

The band's line-up includes some of Finland's top jazz musicians: leader Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen (guitar), Pope Puolitaival (saxophone), Jose Mäenpää (trumpet), Pekka Lehti (double bass), Rasmus Pailos (percussion) and Jaska Lukkarinen (drums).

Sibis Alumni Big Band

keikka

Young composers dive into the ingredients of Sibelius' music and, from them, create versions of their own.

Sibis Alumni Big Band honours the Sibelius 150 years jubilee with a concert where they play new big band music inspired by works of Jean Sibelius. Music for the concert has been commissioned from Tim Hagans, Artturi Rönkä, Kari Ikonen, Valtteri Pöyhönen, Mikko Pellinen and Visa-Pekka Mertanen. The composers approach big band music from their own different viewpoints, but the common denominator of their works is their relationship to the music of Sibelius.

Lecture at 5pm: Improvisation - the art of spontane creation
Discount of 50% of the concert tickets for the participants.

Concert tickets 10 €

There is no barrier between jazz and contemporary music, but a gap, an open space, which activates the imagination and enables spontaneous creation. This applies to the composer and the performing musician alike. When the musician improvises, on his own or as part of an ensemble, he follows the map, the structure created by the composer, making decisions in a fraction of a second – what to play and when, whether to lead or accompany, to play or not to play that particular note at that particular moment – whilst keeping in mind the piece as a whole and responding to the moves of the collective, an organic entity that he is a part of.

The group released their debut album Outer Space (SatnaMusic) in November 2014.

“Their sound was extremely pleasant to the ear live – the context of improvised music did particular justice to Nikula’s bass clarinet.”
- Pasi Virtanen in his blog, “Jazzpossu”
