This year the spotlight country for the free concerts, which have already become a habit of Tampere Jazz Happening, is Portugal.
The first artist on Thursday is Mané Fernandes (born in 1990), a guitarist and composer from Porto who has studied at the Copenhagen Rhythmic Music Conservatory. He has titled his music as “Post-Beat Aesthetics” and thinks that the “music of the rapper Busta Rhymes and the music of John Coltrane have more shared than distinguishing features”. Fernandes is dedicated to finding out about them.
The biggest Portuguese band in Thursday’s theme evening is Axes, a sextet founded by the saxophonist and composer João Mortágua (born in 1987). Six is an appropriate number, because the band’s second album is named Hexagon (2023).
Double bass player Demian Cabaud (born in 1977), is originally from Argentina and has studied in the United States. He has been living in Portugal for 20 years, most of it in the north of the country in Porto, a city about the size of Tampere. He is a hardworking and well-employed band musician who has played on about 100 albums – and on top of that he has made his own music, which can be heard on Thursday’s free theme evening from his latest 10th album.
