In the last concert of the year on December 8, Peter Evans and Sofia Jernberg, who are visiting Finland for the first time, will take over the coastal environment of Hietaniemi.
New York-based Peter Evans has been described as one of the most innovative trumpeters of his generation, gliding effortlessly through waves of jazz, improvisation and contemporary music. Evans is paired with Swedish singer-composer Sofia Jernberg, whose experimental technique and diverse style challenge both genre boundaries and traditional notions of vocal music. The recording of the duo’s debut at the Latvian Skaņu Mežs festival 2018 can be viewed on YouTube.
Hietsu is Happening! will also present two premieres in December. Hiisi, composed for bass clarinet and microtonal guitar by Paavo Korpijaakko, will be heard at the concert, which falls on Finnish Music Day. With the work, Korpijaakko dives into the world of microtonal music for the first time, which will be brought to life by bass clarinettist Heikki Nikula and Petri Kumela with a microtonal guitar.
The second premiere in December is Sami Klemola’s new work for guitar, contact microphone and organ synthesizer pedal. Known as one of the most important figures in experimental, electroacoustic music, Klemola’s work seeks music in the midst of noise, disturbance and silence.
Mikko Innanen and Antti Lötjönen and the Hietsu Impro Orchestra, composed of all the performers of the evening, will also perform in the concert. “We are lucky to continue to operate in a space and atmospheric environment saturated with the history of the Hietsu Pavilion. The dark evenings of autumn winter between the quiet Hietaranta and the Hietaniemi burial ground make the minds of musicians and listeners open and humble to face the new and the unpredictable, ”describes Mikko Innanen.
Hietsu is Happening! is a surprising, multi-artistic and diverse series of events organized in and around the Hietsu pavilion since 2016, with artistic curators Mikko Innanen, Petri Kumela and Antti Lötjönen are hanging around in the pavilion. With the December concert, events involved in different themes have already been organized 24 times.
The concert is organized in cooperation with Helsinki Jazz ry. Helsinki Jazz ry is supported by City of Helsinki, Svenska Kulturfonden and The Finnish Music Foundation.
COVID Pass is required of all visitors aged 16. Face masks are recommended. We kindly ask you to arrive in good time.
