keikka

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra presents a new concert series dedicated to stellar vocalists! The first show in the series will see American jazz singer and songwriter China Moses perform in Finland for the very first time. Having won over audiences around the world, this power woman will take jazz to a new era and create her own standards. The collaborative concert will be conducted by UMO Helsinki’s new chief conductor and artistic director, the American-Austrian Ed Partyka.

Great Voices concert series will be kicked off with a brand new program that will be especially arranged for China Moses and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, called “The Jazz Heart of Soul”. This program will pay homage to the soulful side of vocal jazz and to female soul greats, some well-known and some forgotten, such as Randy Crawford, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald and Millie Jackson. Audience members can expect the golden voice of China Moses to be supported by the full breadth and power of the jazz orchestra, as well as moments featuring the outstanding soloists of UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra in intimate dialogue with our amazing guest vocalist.

A winning performer, Moses approaches jazz in her compelling, unconventional and eclectic way. She is an original songwriter who has inherited her exceptional brilliance from her mother, the celebrated Dee Dee Bridgewater. Expect a wide range of moods and genres from jazz to blues, swing to funk and melancholic ballads to explosive energy. So far, Moses has issued six solo albums – the first of which came out when she was only seventeen years of age – and appeared on dozens of recordings as a sidewoman. She has also tackled the Great American Songbook during her career, paying homage to defining jazz and blues voices who have inspired her, including Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and Etta James. In addition to her career as a musician, the versatile artist has appeared on silver screen and worked as a TV host. chinamoses.com

Ilkka Arola is a jazz trumpeter and crossover artist from Finland who leads Ilkka Arola Sound Tagine. The group describes their music as cinematic adventure music. This captivating mix of folk and jazz expression is spiced up with Middle Eastern flavours, modern beats and cinematic soundscapes. The band is known for its powerful live shows, filled with emotional expression and irresistibly catchy grooves. Travelling in the Middle East and Africa as well as recognizing his own Nordic roots has had a great impact on Arola's music. He plays the distinctive quartertone trumpet and flugelhorn, which allow him to play Arabic maqams and other microtonal music. In a quest for meaningful music-making, Arola started to imitate the human voice with his trumpet. By "singing" through his instrument, Arola tells powerful stories without words.
