Despite its fairly short existence, bassist Joonas Tuuri’s new quartet has already performed at Oslo Jazz Festival last year, and gathered positive attention on club concerts in Helsinki. Tuuri’s honest and heartfelt compositions are influenced by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Kendrick Scott Oracle.

This ultra-positive, high-energy afrojazz trio makes you smile, dance and feel happy as a clam! Trio Toffa’s acclaimed debut album Positive has put the band on main stages of Finland’s major festivals, such as Pori Jazz, Fest Africa, Elojazz and Helsinki Festival (Helsingin Juhlaviikot). Last year the trio played the main role in La mer si vaste at the Finnish National Theatre, and all twelve shows were sold out. Toffa is also featured on Two Tribes – An Intercontinental Journey in Rhythm compilation, recently released by German label Agogo Records.

Welcome to celebrate the love affair of jazz and world music! The folk music festival Etno-Espa takes place on the Espa stage right after Jazz-Espa. Now the events throw a double birthday party to remember at the cosy atmosphere of Café Engel’s inner court!
The party is headlined by the Iranian-born lutist-composer Marouf Majid’s Finnish quartet MA Rouf, who just released their debut album People. MA Rouf mixes Scandinavian cool jazz with Middle Eastern rhythms and dark tones of tanbur and tar lutes. MA Rouf consists of Finnish top musicians Marouf Majidi (tambour, tar, voc), Jouni Järvelä (sax, cl, fl, p), Jukka Haavisto (b) and Mikko Hassinen (dr, perc). This is the first gig of MA Rouf in Helsinki since the album release!
