The long-term collaborative history between UMO and Iro Haarla will see a continuation in Easter time when the big band and the pianist-harpist give a church tour around the Uusimaa region. In addition to the metropolitan area – Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa – the tour reaches to the cities of Porvoo and Askola. It also comprises an afternoon concert at the Helsinki Music Centre on the Holy Thursday.

Entitled Silent Music, the concert gives a cross-section of the compositions that UMO has commissioned from Haarla over her career. Among others, the programme includes the piece Ante Lucem  – ennen päivän koittoa (2005; Eng.Before the Dawn), delving on the events of Easter and the passion of Christ; Kurkien taru (2006; Eng. The Tale of the Cranes) portraying the migration of the majestic birds; and Led by the Wind (2015) – a piece inspired by the might of the wind. The concert will also see the premiere of the title composition, Silent Music (2019), written specifically for the occasion. Many of Haarla’s works initially premiered by UMO have lived on in different arrangements in the repertories of her own ensembles and even on recordings. The Easter concert will be conducted by Mikko Hassinen – already a well-known face at UMO’s helm.

– With my music I aim at bringing some light to the listener, stirring deep feelings and promoting the ability to feel pleasure and pass it on. The main thought behind the concert is finding a quietness within oneself; following the deep sonic textures, the undulating flow of sound, towards the light. Playing with UMO and conductor Mikko Hassinen is an exceptionally interesting chance for me to realise these ideas, Haarla says.

Jazz weekend in Puotilan Kartano 12.-14.4. combines acoustic jazz music and tasty food. Weekend starts 12.4. with Jazz & Dine, that is hosted by Verneri Pohjola (trumpet), Mikko Helevä (hammond) and Tomi Salesvuo (drums). Programme consists of freshly arranged acoustic jazz favourites and original pieces by the trio.

Concert is held in festival hall in Puotilan Kartano. Place limit is 55 people.

Arabian Kevät Festival proudly presents: Modern Gypsy Caravan - Tomi Kettunen Trio. feat. Elina Virtanen

Tomi Kettunen Trio has its musical roots in european gypsy jazz, created by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli in the 30s-50s. Trio is joined by talented jazz vocalist Elina Virtanen, whose warm and dark voice takes the audience to a musical journey to the era of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Trio perfrorms Django Reihardt compositions and some classics from the swing era. The speciality of the concert is a couple amazing swing dancers, who create stunning Lindy Hop -steps to the music.

The Air Force Big Band Finnish Landscapes album release tour featuring Pepa Päivinen, an all-rounder in woodwind instruments as the soloist. 

The Air Force Big Band’s Finnish Landscapes album will bring out the sound of Anssi Tikanmäki’s legendary pieces with a new set of nuances. The music collected on the album has stood the test of time, and the colours of the tones inspired by the landscapes spanning from Lapland’s fells to Uusimaa are as bright as ever. The contributions of several different arrangers result in a fresh, interesting outcome. This is what Tikanmäki has said: “On this album, the Air Force Band has given my compositions a new lease on life.” 

Anssi Tikanmäki has shown strong support and a spirit of involvement, and the Air Force Big Band wishes to honour the composer’s original production in Finnish Landscape. The original album was a major event when it was first released in 1981, instantly reaching a wide-spread audience no matter what their musical preferences were. Anssi Tikanmäki’s spectacular musical palette is introduced in a big band set up for the first time. Saxophone artist Pepa Päivinen and the Air Force Big Band make up an explosive combination and their show won't leave anybody cold.

Manager Charles Gil's Free voices and sounds agency and Jazz Finland have worked together to organize Finnish-French tours in Finland since 2000. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the co-operation, the two touring bands are highly acclaimed quartets in their respective countries: the Finnish Maxxxtet, led by saxophonist Max Zenger, and the French Spring Roll, fronted by flautist-vocalist Sylvaine Hélary.
