Jazz Finland Live

Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Tuomas A. Turunen performs a solo concert for the first time in Helsinki. He presents his new repertoire from the freshly released album Ornaments of Time. The music is mainly written by Turunen himself; beautiful lyric as well as sparkling and energetic interpretations between jazz, classical music and Nordic folklore. Turunen is mainly known as the pianist of Emil Brandqvist Trio, "one of the best European piano jazz trios at the moment" according to Europe's major news agency DPA. Thanks to the trio's success, Turunen has gained attention especially in Germany, but his concert history includes performances in already 20 countries across the world. He has released over ten albums with his different groups, Ornaments of Time being his second solo album.

The Helsinki Association of Saxophone Orchestras will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a festive concert. Big Band Gramophone, playing in the first half of the concert, focuses on the golden era of swing. Its repertoire includes classics by stars such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. The Helsinki Saxophone Orchestra will take to the stage during the second half of the concert. This is a twenty-strong full-blown saxophone orchestra that plays classical orchestral pieces. The wide-ranging programme includes music by a variety of composers, from Brahms to Sibelius. At the after-party for the concert in Café Pokkari, Cuernos Rojos, a seamless symbiosis of four saxophonists and a drummer, will play an incredibly flexible range of music from Dizzy Gillespie and Nirvana to Michael Jackson.
