In May UMO Jazz Orchestra takes a virtual journey behind the Atlantic, when the orchestra tunes in the vibe of New York City’s big band Mondays under the baton of saxophonist Jouni Järvelä. The concert draws inspiration from the big band culture of the Big Apple and features arrangements and compositions from Thad Jones, Jim McNeely, Kenny Werner, Rich Shemaria and Charles Mingus.

Ironically Mondays in New York became to be traditional nights for big bands to perform, since there was a musician’s union ban on Monday night gigs, which were officially designated as musician’s night off. Because musicians weren’t allowed to work in the orchestras of Broadway theaters on Mondays, they played in big bands in the city’s jazz clubs.

The concert planned by Jouni Järvelä will feature uncompromising jazz in the spirit of such New York Monday Night jazz orchestras as Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Gil Evans Monday Night Orchestra and Rich Shemaria Jazz Orchestra.
