Sweet and Terrible – Jazz in Swedish with Claes Andersson and Annika Cleo

One of the figures of the Finnish cultural life, Claes Andersson, and the vocalist Annika Cleo have treat us to an entertaining concert of words and music. The programme consists of new songs, evergreens with witty Swedish lyrics by Andersson and classic pieces from Monica Zetterlund’s repertoire.

Saxophonist Esa Pietilä's solo concerts represent the best of the Finnish saxophone. His technical bravura coupled with the ability to get outstanding ranges of timbre and texture out of his instrument result in powerful outbursts of emotion. His sonic palette and improvisation is made of minimalistic whispers, explosions of energy, polyphonic expression, surprising rhythmic patterns and even fugue-like improvisation techniques.

Now Pietilä has undertaken to enrich his sound even further by introducing electronic effects into his sonic toolbox. The result will be premiered at a unique concert at Viikki church on 25 January. What we are in for is surprises, surprises and yet more surprises, says Pietilä.

In the concert Pietilä’s improvised music takes completely new forms as he experiments on motion sensors and other forms of live electronics. So equipped he will conjure up an entirely new phantasy world with undiscovered places and spaces, made out of the singing of the saxophone.
