KNYST! is known to deliver extremely intense live shows, which they really demonstrated at Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2012. This was apparently enough to send the trio on to the finals in the prestigious Jazz Intro contest. Ingvild Bagøien from Radio Revolt in Trondheim writes the following about the concert: "KNYST! opened the show and played half-free compositions with an insane energy and drive .... [they have] a musical expression that is both playful, unexpected, calculated, technical and intuitive at the same time. They played so hard and sometimes so energetic that I just sat there laughing, while bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen caused flaps of skin to fly across the stage. "

First and foremost, KNYST! plays "cooking" music. The tunes consist of everything from simple pulsating riffs to more complex conceptual structures, and on this basis the trio explores the interface between the written and the totally free. Kasper's intense lines, spiral-like phrasing and motivic improvisations are parried, rooted and challenged by Christian's ongoing bass playing, and it all centers around Andreas' flexible, melodic, fractured, yet hard-swinging beat. Together they create a continuous stream of musical ideas, and show that composition and improvisation are two sides of the same coin. The common denominator that binds it all together is freedom, openness, and last but not least - playfulness!
