The beautiful dramatic arc drawn by saxophonist Jukka Perko’s versions of Finnish hymns and his series of church recitals running into the hundreds now receives a worthy addition as Verneri Pohjola joins his Avara trio on trumpet. Faced with the fundamental issues of life, the men play in search of the beauty and truth of music and find themselves in places discoverable only via the art of getting lost. No matter how wild the versions get, there is always a sanctified core to that resists interpretation. It is what it is. Courage and humility, respect for tradition and the search for something new, scarcity and plenty, acoustic and electric – our traditional hymns receive a new and noble life as Avara explores these opposites.
Jukka Perko - saxophone
Teemu Viinikainen - guitar
Jarmo Saari - guitar
Verneri Pohjola - saxophone

Legendary vibraphonist and northeastern Finland’s gift to the world of jazz brings his Mokners ensemble to Suomenlinna straight from the 1980s. The smell of jazz-fusion is in the air as the Mokners is joined its old partner-in-crime from No Hope, Kari “Sonny” Heinilä, the Rollins of Kiukainen. As if that wasn’t enough, the evening also presents the opportunity to witness two hotshot vibraphonists take each other on as Panu Savolainen joins the fast and loose retro fest.
Severi Pyysalo - vibraphone
Jussi Lehtonen - drums
Timo Hirvonen - bass
Kari "Sonny" Heinilä - saxophones
Panu Savolainen - vibraphone
