Kalle Salonen Band feat. Marjo Leinonen
Hammond wizard Kalle Salonen returns to the terrace of Elmun Baari, located in the premises of the rock club Nosturi, with a string of top-notch guests this summer. On five Saturday afternoons in May-August, Salonen will take the stage with his top band and a changing guest from the vanguard of Finnish popular music. This year’s guests are EeroKoivistoinen, the grand old man of Finnish jazz; the chameleonic guitarist Timo Kämäräinen; Niko Ahvonen, the cornerstone of Finnish soul; the dazzling vocalist Marjo Leinonen and the pioneering prog rock artist Jukka Gustavson.
The concerts are composed of two sets, with Kalle Salonen Band kicking off the show at 16:00 with a set of their original music. The second set starts an hour later and will see the host and his group joined by one of the guests. The DJs of the house will be entertaining the audience before and after the show.
The terrace of Elmun Baari offers a fine seaside setting for live music at the heart of Helsinki. There is no admission fee to this afternoon concert series, and should the weather prove unfavourable Salonen and his crew will be playing indoors.

The 2013 Yrjö Award-winning pianist, keyboardist and composer Kari Ikonen (b.1973) is one of Finland’s most prominent jazz musicians. He is perhaps best-known for his own trio and for his international sextet Karikko but he has also written music for various ensembles, such as the UMO Jazz Orchestra. The 1986 album Upside Downside was a turning point on Mike Stern's career. The former Miles Davis guitarist has been a beacon figure for jazz guitarists ever since. Stern performed with Jussi Lehtonen and Joonatan Rautio in 2014 at the Sibelius Academy's DIG. Festival.
Guitarist Varre Vartiainen released a big band album for Blue Note with Espoo Big Band earlier this year. In this concert he will be taking a sweeping look at his favourite.
