So So Sibelius! is an event for singing and making music together, based on familiar themes from works by Sibelius – but far from serious!
Jazz concert: Adventures of Myky the Cat at the birthplace of jazz in America (Rehearsal hall Paavo)
Myky the Cat grew up watching how the blues moggies, ragtime tomcats and marching felines of New Orleans all came together in a bar and discovered a common swing. Soon all the cats in the neighbourhood were singing and dancing to the new music, jazz. Children attending the concert will be able to join in making music. The concert is intended for everyone, although we recommend that the youngest children be accompanied by their parents.

Dr. Co-Brass is a duo made up of Tero Toivonen, who has a D.Mus. degree in audience outreach, and multitalented music educator Maiju Kopra. They present the entire history of brass music in a concise and funny package that takes brass instruments from the past to the present and into the future.
Musical bedtime story: The Mountain that Loved the Bird (Organo)
This story is about the power of friendship: how little things can come together to bring about a life-changing event, and how someone cares enough to make an effort on behalf of another. The story reminds us of joy, love and other emotions. Principally intended for children aged 7 to 12, the story is equally enjoyable for adults.

The best of Finnish funk, soul, jazz reggae, hip hop, afro and groove will be awarded in the traditional Funky Awards Gala on Saturday 30 January at Helsinki’s Ravintola Pressa.
The 16th Funky Awards will gather some of the most influential players under the same roof and offer full-length live shows from the electro-soul heart-throb Reino Nordin, hip hop machine Laineen Kasperi & Palava Kaupunki and the messengers of Finnish Afro-funk, The Blassics.

Participants in this panel discussion on European jazz include Italian pianist Salvatore Bonafede, Swedish bass player Lars Danielsson and Finnish trumpet player Verneri Pohjola. The moderator is Harri Uusitorppa, a culture journalist with the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

The programme features works written by Joe Lovano, inspired by the moods and characters of cinema.
The quartet founded by American sax player Joe Lovano in 2014 opens Sibafest with a powerful and energetic serving of jazz.
The second half of the concert is taken up by the Sibis Alumni Big Band with added strings, conducted by composer and arranger Vince Mendoza and with Joe Lovano and trumpet player Tim Hagans as soloists. Their programme features favourite tunes from the scores to the films The Summer of ’42, Henry the V, L’ascenseur pour l’échafaud, The Subterraneans, Death Wish, Chinatown, A Streetcar Named Desire and Once Upon a Time in the West.
