Pianist and keyboardist Seppo Kantonen, who has had an incredibly versatile career, returns to the world of piano trio expression inspired by his fresh top-notch ensemble and new compositions!

Over his more than 40-year professional career, Seppo Kantonen has played across the spectrum of jazz and even beyond. This sought-after musician has had plenty of work in various genres, from rock to baroque. Even as a young music student, Kantonen wanted to master all genres just in case, and, in his own style. This award-winning and unique virtuoso has been heard on around 200 albums, including lineups with Pekka Pohjola, Eero Koivistoinen, and Otto Donner. In recent years, Kantonen has become more known as a composer.

The new trio, formed in 2023, with bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Markku Ounaskari, marks a return to the traditional trio lineup for the maestro.

Long time friends Pope Puolitaival, Mikko Helevä and Tomi Salesvuo played their first jam during the Sibelius-Academy Jazz department studies in the mid 90’s. Since then the musicians have worked in various projects together during the years. Salesvuo Syncopation's debut album Complete Loft Sessions underlines the interpretation that captures the listener with Salesvuo’s playful melodies and the trio’s energetic performance!

British multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith is coming to Pori with Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva. With a career spanning over 50 years and hundreds of albums, Frith is known for his collaborations with John Zorn, Syd Barrett, Mike Oldfield, Brian Eno, and Viktoria Mullova.

The evening will be opened by Tampo, a Tampere-based supergroup playing music described as "coconut tango."

FRED FRITH & SUSANA SANTOS SILVA

The duo's story began with a meeting at a workshop in Porto in 2011. Since then, Susana has been involved in several of Fred's projects, including a quartet with Chris Cutler and Heike Liss, as well as recent appearances as a guest with the Fred Frith Trio. The Météo Festival proposed a duo gig, which seemed like a very logical step. The performance was recorded by French radio, and in 2023, the Rogu'Art record label released the album Laying Demons to Rest, which has received considerable acclaim. This tour gives the duo the opportunity to deepen their musical relationship and explore the limitless possibilities of this unusual instrumentation.

TAMPO

Tampo, operating in Tampere, is an instrumental band playing the music of Kusti Vuorinen. Their music has been described as 'coconut tango.' This description is apt in that the material seamlessly cuts through old tangos and Caribbean swing without regard to era or style rules. This can be confirmed by listening to the TampoMambo live album released by Karkia Mistika (2019).
