Steve Coleman and Five Elements

To call alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman ”influential” is an understatement: Awarded and acclaimed artist was one of the founders of the so-called M-Base movement, has led several groups, and has recorded extensively. His main group ‘Steve Coleman and Five Elements’ began in 1981 and is still active today – and now performing at April Jazz. Colemans music incorporates many elements from the folkloric music of the African Diaspora fused with musical ideas influenced by ancient metaphysical concepts.

For his ground-breaking work, Coleman has received many grants and prizes, such as MacArthur Fellowship and Guggenheim Fellowship awards. Last year the 67th Annual DownBeat International Critics Poll granted Coleman the fourth place in alto saxophone.  The band includes acclaimed group of musicians: trumpetist Jonathan Finlayson, who was also named in the DownBeat Critics Poll as trumpetist and Rising Star Arranger, bassist Anthony Tidd and drummer Sean Rickman, as well as Grammy nominated hip hop artist Kokayi.

In the beginning of the 20th century dance music was revolutionized by composers like Stravinsky and Debussy. Over the past twenty years, Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has influenced today’s music in the same radical way. Hundred years after The Rite of Spring, Hans Ek has created Dance Music Symphony as a tribute to one of the most important musical genres in our time. Dance Music Symphony is orchestral remixes of EDM-songs by artists like Skrillex, Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Avicii and Swedish House Mafia.

VERNERI POHJOLA & MIKA KALLIO: ANIMAL IMAGE
Animal Image is a soundtrack album to a poetic documentary directed by photographer and film maker Perttu Saksa, depicting the infinite relationship between man and animal. Edited to an improvised score by Finnish trumpetist Verneri Pohjola and percussionist Mika Kallio, the film illustrates the emotional bond between man and animal beyond the boundaries of written language or fictional storylines.

The document follows nature-photographer and writer Heikki Willamo’s journey to the landscape of the post ice-age northern wilderness to explore man’s ancient relationship to his prey and Willamo’s personal encounters with the inhabitants of the northern woods. Man, bear, sky and fire: the Finnish forest is a place like nowhere else, a place of dreams and the imagination, an ancient place where its denizens live in the shadows.
