UMO & Nicole Willis: My Name Is Nicole Willis -levynjulkaisukonserttiSellosali, espoo2.2. At 19:00

keikka

The New York-based singer Nicole Willis, who rocketed to the Finnish soul scene some ten years ago, teamed up with UMO last autumn and released the critically-acclaimed album My Name is Nicole Willis. Now it is time for the release party!

The album release is celebrated with two concerts, one of which will be held in Sello Hall. In addition to material from the new album, the concert features conductor Mikko Hassinen’s brand-new arrangements of songs Willis has selected for the concert.

The musical style of Willis, who grew up in Brooklyn, New York, can be described as a melting pot of urban music where soul, jazz and funk meet up. Through her creative process, Willis attempts to break the traditional rules and says she is constantly looking for new sources of inspiration to carry her music to new and exciting directions. Besides her solo work, Willis is known for, among other things, her cooperation with The Soul Investigators band and Jimi Tenor.

Njet Njet 9 is a lively mini big band with a cheerful touch to making music. Their music is rich in arrangement, painting vast musical landscapes that range from nostalgic to futuristic. As band leader Ville Kyttälä puts it "Njet Njet 9's music sounds like Zappa and Zawinul are playing tennis with Massive Attack at a Swedish summer cottage". Easy going the music may be, but there's still lots of layers to dig into.

Njet Njet 9 is releasing their second album Dark Soul in November and continuing their mission to open-mindedly mix genres and not take things too seriously.
