Jazz Finland Live

This spring at Korjaamo, South African–born saxophonist, composer, and arranger Shannon Mowday takes the stage with Sointi Jazz Orchestra for a unique concert experience. Mowday takes the role of composer and conductor in a concert featuring new orchestral arrangements created for Sointi Jazz Orchestra from her earlier works, such as Bridge Over #MeToo and Colourful Houses, as well as music that draws on her South African roots. The program also includes a premiere of a composition written for Sointi Jazz Orchestra.

Mowday is known as a skilled woodwind player, particularly on baritone and bass saxophone and contrabass clarinet. She works broadly with both small ensembles and large formations, and has received several recognitions, including the Jazzprisen Årets Verk award as well as the Storband and Ungjazz prizes.

In her work, Mowday weaves together her South African roots, Norwegian aesthetics, life experience and a feminological perspective. She blurs the boundaries between genres and breaks the familiar moulds of jazz and improvised music. Mowday brings elements of traditional music into the sound of large ensembles while also respecting jazz and big band traditions. Her music is characterised by a strong groove, the power of rhythm, and recurring harmonic and rhythmic patterns.

Sointi Jazz Orchestra is one of Finland’s most interesting jazz orchestras. The ensemble is known for its carefully curated concert productions and its bold approach to new music. Sointi has carried out numerous premieres with both Finnish and international soloists.
