Cassandra Wilson, one of the most distinguished jazz-singers in the world, arrives in Finland after a 20-year absence. Wilson has two Grammies under her belt, and she’s been voted best female vocalist by the DownBeat-magazine critic’s poll for an astonishing 17 times since 1996. In 2001 Time-magazine named her as America’s best singer. Cassandra Wilson takes to the stage at the Finlandia-house on 22.4.2014 in the festival’s opening concert, which will be held in Helsinki for the first time. The biggest jazz festival of the capital region will continue for the duration of the week in Tapiola, Espoo 23-27.4.2014.

Cassandra Wilson is an American singer, songwriter, producer and arranger, with a musical oeuvre that is both extensive and many-faceted. Beside her illustrious solo career, she is also known for several noteworthy collaborations with artists from different musical genres, thus helping bring jazz music to a broader audience. Wilson has recorded with, apart from many of the greats of jazz, afro-funk star Angélique Kidjo, who is well known to us Finns.

As another example of her diversity is the collaboration with hip hop/neo soul-group The Roots. They recorded two albums in the mid-nineties; both are considered classics within the genre.
