Norwegian-Dutch quartet Beiggja was born from a creative retreat in the winter forests of Norway. Their debut album Morning (2025) blends Nordic spaciousness, melodic sensitivity and free improvisation into a sound praised for its beauty, presence and deep sense of interplay. Featuring saxophonist Kika Sprangers, pianist Kjetil Mulelid, bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen, Beiggja presents a refined and deeply expressive vision of contemporary European jazz.

The band 100 – Mäkynen/Mannila/Koivistoinen/Antila/Mäensivu, led by drummer Teppo Mäkynen, will perform in 12 cities across Finland. Come and enjoy jazz with the whole family!

To celebrate the Jazz in Finland 100 anniversary year, the Finnish Jazz Federation, together with drummer and bandleader Teppo Mäkynen, has assembled a supergroup for a special tour performing new arrangements of gems from Finnish jazz music. The ensemble, made up of representatives from different generations of musicians, incorporates sounds and rhythms from electronic music, R&B and rap into its expression, bringing the history of Finnish jazz into the present day. At the heart of the concert is the joy of making and experiencing music, driven forward by the band’s energetic expression.

Bandleader Teppo Mäkynen is one of Finland’s most respected jazz musicians. He is known for his open-minded and visionary ability to move between different musical styles, and his music has reached a wide new jazz audience. The lineup also features a living legend of Finnish jazz, saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen, international acclaimed bassist Kaisa Mäensivu, and rising stars: singer-keyboardist Maja Mannila and vibraphonist Mikko Antila.

All concerts are open to all ages, and affordable children’s tickets are available. Concerts begin in the early evening on weekdays and in the afternoon on weekends. Most performances last approximately one hour.

Jazz visionaries Teppo Mäkynen and Mikko Hassinen join forces to compose a new work for Turku Jazz Orchestra. Premiering at Fuuga in December, the piece transforms the traditional big band sound into an electroacoustic, shape-blurring and electrically expanded jazz work that speaks strongly to the present moment. The work will also be recorded during the same weekend.

Inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s film Pierrot le fou, the piece approaches big band tradition with a knowingly “misread” perspective: history is acknowledged, but never treated reverently. The compositional process unfolds cyclically, moving from live performance to remixing and back to the stage. Beyond their shared background in drumming, Mäkynen and Hassinen are united by a distinctive use of electronics as both an extension and a counterforce to acoustic expression, creating a sound that is at once familiar and entirely new.
