Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble is a group of eight musicians, founded by Helsinki-based guitarist Janne Halonen and Benin-based percussionist and singer Noël Saïzonoun. The project started in January 2012 when Halonen together with drummer Juha Räsänen and bass-player Sampo Riskilä traveled to Finnish-African Culture Center, Villa Karo to Benin.
The group recorded their first album "Beaucoup de Piment!" in Cotonou and released it in Finland in May 2013. Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble combines traditional west-african rhythms to jazz, funk and soul.
In 2026, it will be 100 years since jazz symbolically arrived in Finland with the ship Andania. The year thus marks a historic centenary celebration for Finnish jazz: Jazz in Finland 100. The anniversary highlights Finnish jazz and its artists both in Finland and abroad, celebrating jazz as part of Finland’s cultural heritage. The Jazz in Finland 100 campaign is coordinated by the Finnish Jazz Federation.
