Soundstream Quartet

Summer Jazz Club starts at Poppari! This summer jazz is in the air in Jyväskylä as the monthly Summer Jazz Club takes over Poppari, beginning from 27 May. Each month, two up-and-coming young groups that have strong ties to Jyväskylä city will take the stage and jam to their - and the audience's - heart's content. July's edition presents two promising quartets; Soundstream Quartet and Johannes Sarjasto Quartet.
Modern jazz group Soundstream Quartet came into being when two Äänekoski natives, Ilkka Oksanen and Antti Lähdesmäki formed a prog-fusion band for Keitele Jazz Festival 2014. Soon they found two friends and fellow students from Jyväskylä Conservatory to complement the group. Soundstream Quartet's music philosophy emphasises interpretational freedom and each band member's hand and musical background are stressed as components that make a rich musical whole.
Heikki Selamo, guitar
Antti Lähdesmäki, rhodes
Pekka Löhönen, bass
Ilkka Oksanen, drums
Saxophonist Johannes Sarjasto is similarly, a graduate of Jyväskylä Conservatory. Sarjasto and his band mates have been educated in various music adacemies, such as Sibelius Academy, Jazz Institut Berlin and Högskolan för Scen och Musik in Göteborg. Johannes Sarjasto Quartet was started in December 2013 when Sarjasto booked some studio time and asked some of his favourite players to join him. After successful recording sessions Sarjasto and co. decided to continue working together, taking up the name Johannes Sarjasto Quartet.
The group's goal is to make uncompromising music inspired by Afro-American tradition as well as the European tradition. Inspiration can come from outside the realm of music as well: questions concerning existence and purpose in life act both as a source of inspiration and a driving force in the group's compositions.
