Note: A free advance ticket is required for the event. Tickets will be available in August. More information below.

Maunula Unplugged concerts offer soul-nourishing, delicately tuned music—regardless of genre or style. The series kicks off with performances by some of Finland's top jazz piano trios. For the evening, a baby grand piano will be brought into the Metsäpuros Hall, generously loaned by Steinway Piano Gallery Helsinki.

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Tuomo Uusitalo Trio
The Tuomo Uusitalo Trio—featuring pianist Tuomo Uusitalo, bassist Juuso Rinta, and drummer Roope Kantonen—delivers a piano trio sound that is rooted in tradition yet modern in expression. Their repertoire blends jazz standards with original compositions penned by all three members.

7:30 PM – 8:30 PM: Seppo Kantonen Trio
This ensemble began rehearsing Seppo Kantonen's new compositions at the start of 2023, and their debut album Call was recorded in March 2024. The trio's musical language is expressive and loosely structured, yet grounded in composed material. The atmospheric quality of Kantonen's pieces is enriched by Markku Ounaskari's beautiful drum sound and Antti Lötjönen's rhythmically strong yet sensitive bass playing. The trio strives for musical clarity, blending meaningful consonance and dissonance.

Tickets: The event is free of charge, but requires an advance reservation. Tickets will be available starting August 4, 2025, via the Maunula House website. From the same date, tickets can also be picked up at the Maunula Library.

Gigs on the same day in helsinki

Lounaskonsertti: Jaska Lukkarinen & UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra – Rainbow BlueSavoy-teatteri, helsinki11.9. At 12:00

Jazz for lunch – yes please! The Savoy Theatre’s and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s much-anticipated lunch concerts continue in the autumn season of 2025! The free concert tickets can be reserved from Wednesday 20th August at 3 pm onwards at the Savoy Theatre and Lippu.fi, see below for more detailed instructions.

The drummer Jaska Lukkarinen performed with the UMO for the first time in 2003, and now he takes centre stage in this concert series. Lukkarinen is currently finalising his artistic doctoral degree at the Sibelius Academy, and the joint concert with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra marks the final artistic component of his doctoral degree.

Lukkarinen is exploring different approaches to accompaniment on the jazz drum set, with a particular focus in this concert on the concept of soloistic accompaniment. His research examines ways to integrate the drums into the overall timbre of the big band as well as combining the surprise elements and dynamic extremes of small ensemble performances with big band accompaniment. The music is composed by Mikko Hassinen, who also conducts the concert.

Most of all, the concert will showcase great big band jazz – not dry, academic research.

Please note! The concert will be held in the Savoy Theatre at 12-13. The admission is free but we recommend that you book a ticket in advance at the Savoy Theatre box office (0 €) or Lippu.fi (1,50 – 3 € commission). Admission only with pre-booked tickets until 11:50am, after which the remaining seats will be given to customers without a pre-booking. Please arrive early as the doors will be closed once the concert has started. The duration of the concert is 1 hour.

The concert is part of UMO’s 50th anniversary season.

Maja Mannila is a remarkable young jazz/soul singer, pianist and composer. Together with her band, she performs her own English-language songs that blend elements of R&B, soul, jazz and gospel music. Raised in a family of musicians, she plays with confidence while emphasising that freedom and fun are essential elements in creating and performing music. Looking ahead, Mannila aims to record and tour internationally – both with her band and as a solo artist.

Maja has caught the attention of British drummer Richard Spaven and singer Anthony Strong, who have invited her to perform with them. The band was selected for the 2023 Nordic Jazz Comets event to represent new Finnish jazz. Internationally, the band has performed in Germany, Slovenia, England and Estonia. Maja also gave two concerts in April 2023 in Lithuania as a soloist with the Kaunas Big Band, performing her own material. She also sings and plays in the up-and-coming band Peela. In 2021–2022, she toured Central Europe as part of Iiro Rantala's Flock ensemble.

Maja's debut album Up & Down, released in June 2022, was warmly received by Finnish media. Her second album, Seasons, was released on 16 November 2023.

In the Maja Mannila Trio, she is joined by Severi Sorjonen (drums) and Johannes Granroth (bass).
