Jussi Fredriksson Trio: With a thin brush

Pianist Jussi Fredriksson explores different jazz piano textures in his artistic doctoral project by applying jazz techniques over instrument boundaries. Fredriksson’s first doctoral degree concert explores the narrowest of textures: A monophonic melody, two-hand unison, and two-voice polyphony. Fredriksson is publishing a new trio album in the autumn of 2014. The doctoral degree concert’s audience will get a look at the artistic laboratory used for the fresh release.

Jazz trio HERD and Aili Ikonen's collaborative project Jazzbasilli (the Jazz Bug) has been one of the most active touring acts of the year. The last performances of 2014 will take place this December at the National Theatre's Lavaklubi in Helsinki and at Pikkuteatteri in Lahti. HERD and Aili Ikonen brought out their album Jazzbasilli in October 2013 to great acclaim, and the release has been followed by an intense year on the road; to date, the group has played at almost every Finnish jazz festival. But how you end the years matters the most, right? - This will be carried out with style, as the Kullervo Linna Foundation Prize winner Vieno Kekkonen makes a guest appearance in the both concerts.

Known for her masterful technique, Aili Ikonen has appeared as a soloist for UMO Jazz Orchestra, among others, and she also fronts the group Aili Ikonen & Tribute to Ella. HERD is one of the most successful Finnish jazz groups of the recent years. They won the prestigious European Jazz Competition in 2011, were the house band at the Pori Jazz Festival 2010 and have released two albums. This autumn, HERD has hosted their own popular club series in Lahti, and the December's concert at Pikkuteatteri will act as the grand finale for the autumn's monthly concerts.

Mikko Mattlar, the maker of the popular radio programme Iskelmäiltama on Radio Helsinki will act as a host on 12 December at Lavaklubi.

WE JAZZ 2014Kahvila Sävy, helsinki12.12. At 17:00

We think jazz is too rarely performed at café’s nowadays. Our purpose is to fix this
at Kahvila Sävy, which has just the ambience we’re looking for. The sets by the inter-
national trio of bass player ANTTI LÖTJÖNEN, drummer TEPPO MÄKYNEN and
the US rising star saxophonist LOGAN RICHARDSON are suitable for music fans of
all ages. The trio will also hit the studio in Helsinki to record material for the
upcoming “Loetjoenen/Maekynen” album, excerpts of which will be heard live for
the first time.

WE JAZZ 2014Ääniwalli, helsinki12.12. At 21:00

Come Friday, our jazz installation will take over both spaces at Ääniwalli.
The very personal sounding trio ELIFANTREE will commence the night with presenting
their new music. The Finnish jazz legends OLLI AHVENLAHTI and EERO KOIVIS-
TOINEN will perform their compositions with a group specially assembled for this
occasion. The “3G” stands for three generations of jazzmen and the quintet features
TIMO LASSY on sax, TEEMU ÅKERBLOM on bass and SAMI NUMMELA on drums.
This is what first-rate Finnish jazz sounded, sounds and will sound like. PHRONESIS
is a gem of European jazz and its an absolute thrill to be able to present their Hel-
sinki debut at We Jazz. Led by the Danish bass player JASPER HØIBY, the group is a
mainstay on tastemaker jazz magazine covers across the globe. Our money is on
them being the “next big thing” in European jazz.
