Jussi Lampela Nonet (www)

Jussi Lampela Nonet’s autumnal concert series reaches its grand finale on 9 December at a concert with two leading Finnish vocalists Emma Salokoski and Yona (a.k.a Johanna Pitkänen) joining the orchestra. Christmas concert “Joulun jazzimpi puoli” (The Jazzier Side of Christmas) takes the approach of cool jazz to traditional and rarer Christmas songs, giving plenty of room also for instrumental acrobatics from Lampela’s A-listing crew.
The Emma-awarded Emma Salokoski is a versatile singer who has released three albums with her own group, Emma Salokoski Ensemble. She is sought-after as a guest among other artists, having appeared on recordings and at gigs of a variety of genres. She was selected as the Female Vocalist of the Year at the Emma Gala of 2006.
Yona is, likewise, a winner of the Emma Prize; the year was 2010 and the category the Newcomer of the Year. She leads her own band, Liikkuvat Pilvet, and has released four albums by now. She collaborates with several Finnish artists and is at home in genres through jazz to reggae. Last year, Yona came second in the Seinäjoen tangomarkkinat tango singing competition.
Jussi Lampela is an acclaimed and versatile composer and arranger. His nonet was first introduced to the general audience through the release of the album Lampela X Eskola, released on Ricky-Tick Records in 2010. Trumpeter Jukka Eskola appears as a soloist on the recording. In addition to Eskola, Lampela’s long-term partners in music include Vantaan Viihdeorkesteri, UMO Jazz Orchestra, Teppo Mäkynen and Pessi Levanto.

The venue Kellohalli at Teurastamo (The Abattoir) offers many ways to present three
very diverse jazz acts. Our way will, most likely, not be among your first guesses. Sax
man TIMO LASSY and wurlitzer piano player GEORGIOS KONTRAFOURIS are
nowadays known as an expressive duo formation combining A+ song material and
first rate artistry. They’re a fun pair to watch on stage, too. The band led by
saxophone player JUSSI KANNASTE features US natives HARISH RAGHAVAN on
bass and NASHEET WAITS on drums. Finnish piano great AKI RISSANEN, also
known as "+", completes the quartet. The Berlin-based Finnish guitarist/composer
MARKUS PESONEN presents his rarely-seen 11-piece orchestra HENDECTET which
includes players of 8 different nationalities serving us their new music.
