Ahvenlahti & Koivistoinen Legacy

Generations of musicians meet in the spirit of Finnish jazz! Metropolia music students are joined by trailblazers of Finnish jazz: pianist-composer Olli Ahvenlahti and saxophonist-composer Eero Koivistoinen. Joining them on stage are Metropolia lecturers, trombonist-conductor Antti Rissanen and drummer-bandleader Tomi Salesvuo. The program features works by Ahvenlahti and Koivistoinen – both instrumental and vocal – from the 1970s up to the present day.
The concert is part of the Arabian Kevät festival pop/jazz student Festival organized by Metropolia UAS.

The National Library of Finland will dedicate its spring concert on 16 April to the centenary of jazz in Finland.
The arrival of this music from the New World in the Nordic countries was a major moment in Finland during the interwar years. The inventive playing style, lively rhythms and swinging hips threw Finnish musicians straight in at the deep end, creating a wave that carried names such as Dallapé and Rytmi-pojat into the canon of Finnish popular music.
To celebrate this period, the National Library will host an evening titled 100 Years of Jazz, featuring scholarly insights on jazz in Finland alongside stunning interpretations of evergreen works.
Starting at 17.00 in the Cupola Hall, Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo will give a lecture on the arrival of jazz and the saxophone in Finland. After a brief interval, he will join soprano Meri Siirala and pianist Risto-Matti Marin for a concert at 18.15.
