CHRONOVARIATIONS is a work for tenor saxophone, live electronics and resonating metal objects. The work overlaps acoustic and electronic sound and merges minimalist ambient and experimental avant-garde into transforming sound fields. The themes at the heart of the album are resonance, the concept of time and emergence.
The work was created using metal plates and pipes salvaged from a Helsinki scrapyard, to which electromagnetic actuators were attached. The actuators use vibrations to transform the scrap metal into resonating speakers, whose sonic properties include both stunning overtone resonances and violent distortions.
OutoJazz's Sunday afternoon is a unique opportunity to hear this work, originally recorded in the medieval St. Henry's Church in Nousiainen, live in the over seventy-year-old, colossal Kiisuhalli, whose seven-second natural reverberation will take you on an unforgettable journey to the spheres and beyond!
Heli Hartikainen – tenor saxophone, composition, concept
Esther Calderón Morales – live electronics, programming

OutoJazz 2025 | Mathias Sandberg TrioTeatteri Kiisu, outokumpu18.5. At 16:30

Tickets 15 €
As this year's OutoJazz festival draws to a close, it's time to invite Captain Mathias Sandberg and his trio to the helm.
For the past 15 years, Sandberg has toured the Nordic jazz scene with top artists, including Georg Riedel, Pierre Swärd, Peter Asplund, Nick Mancini, Jukka Eskola, Teppo Mäkynen, Manuel Dunkel and many others. Having toured both in Europe and the United States, Sandberg plays around a hundred concerts a year, making him probably one of the most active giggers on the Finnish jazz scene.
In this year's closing concert of OutoJazz, he invites festival guests on an intense but peaceful journey through the sound waves that flow along with him. While many artists seek dynamics above all from the averages upwards, this trio has a special gift for capturing listeners to follow the very quiet and small-gesture, but all the more meaningful and nuanced harmony.
Mathias Sandberg – guitar
Zacharias Holmkvist – double bass
Stefan Brokvist – drums

OutoJazz's Melting Sunday concert segment will be opened by Timo Tuominen from Leppävirta with his piano improvisation.
You may have never heard of Timo Tuominen, but it is even more certain that you have never heard his music. At least not the repertoire he will play at the Teatteri Kiisu concert. For several decades, he has been conversing with the piano in various spaces – on Sunday 18 May, he will do so in the even older concrete vaults of Teatteri Kiisu. Music can be written, but it can also be breathed. This concert is about that breath. Music that magically arises in the moment, in the interaction between the player, the instrument, the space and the people present.
Timo Tuominen – piano
