The Finnish Big Band Federations celebrates it’s 40th anniversary on 5–6 October. This year, the Finnish Big Band Championships, organized every other year, are held at Arabia Hall (Arabiankatu 2, Helsinki) on 6 October. The event is admission free.
The anniversary year of Vantaan Viihdeorkesteri culminates with the three artists performing Lauri Porras “Aineen ja ajan messu” at Finlandia Hall on 19 November.
The autobiography of Charles Mingus is published first time in Finnish in October. Koiraakin kurjempi (Beneath the Underdog ) is published by Aviador Kustannus and the it is translated by Jussi Niemi. Live interpretations of the Mingus’ music are heard at the book release clubs in Helsinki, Tampere, Kotka and Pori.
One of top names in Finnish jazz scene, bassist Antti Lötjönen tours with drummer legend Jeff “Train” Watts’ band in Europe during 20 to 25 of November. In addition, Lötjönen can be spotted in Finnish concerts stages together with bands such as 3TM, Timo Lassy Band and Ricky-Tick Big Band.
The cello-virtuoso Vincent Courtois will be on an extensive tour in the Baltics and Finland From October 14th to November 2nd. Starting by a solo concert at the Vilnius Jazz Festival, the French cellist will continue with five more solo concerts in Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
Eclipse Music is releasing the debut album MEGETME from the Tuomas J. Trio on the 5th of October. The album features a special guest, Manuel Dunkel, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in Finland.
Umo and vocalist Emma Salokoski are heading for a Christmas tour in December. The tour features six concerts in five cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Porvoo and Tampere, from where the tour starts on 7 December.
Jukka Eskola has been designated as the artistic director for Oulu All Star Big Band and will start in his new position in the beginning of 2019. This week Eskola is seen as the soloist of the Oulu All Star Big Band, together with saxophonist Jukka Perko, as the orchestra performs Jazz Noir from Jussi Lampela.
