A concert of world premieres: Heikki Sarmanto: Songs to poems by Emily Dickinson, arranged for choir by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. The melodic idiom of a jazz old-timer combined with Romantic lyrical poetry, colourfully arranged for a cappella choir.
Heikki Sarmanto is one of the most prominent names in Finnish jazz. He has been interested in the work of 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson since his youth and has written hundreds of songs to her poems. Composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi arranged a varied selection of these for choir at Sarmanto's request, to be premiered by Chamber Choir cc FREIA at this concert.
Extracts from Emily Dickinson's letters are read (in Finnish) by Ella Pyhältö.
