Autumn programme of Flame Jazz presents topical Finnish names and guests from all over the globe.
After this autumn season, the Turku-based concert series Flame Jazz can celebrate its 5th anniversary. The aim to increase the visibility of jazz in the Turku area for the Turku European Capital of Culture in 2011 came to stay, and after a few years of hard work Flame Jazz stands relatively steadily on its own feet, peering into a relatively bright future. Lifting live jazz music to the same league with other art forms has happened tardily in Finland and it seems still to require time and effort. Attaining this aim continues to drive Flame Jazz onwards.
The core of this autumn’s programme is made of Finnish jazz. Both veteran artists and up-and-coming stars will be represented: of the former worth mentioning is the legendary Eero Koivistoinen, giving a show at Café Tiljan in November, and of the latter Teemu Åkerblom Quartet, spotlighted in the concert series Talent Night. The release of their debut album is scheduled for this autumn, too. One of the definitive highlights of the season will be trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra’s collaboration concert, which sees the premiere of two brand new compositions from Pohjola.
This said, the season will, nevertheless, be the most international that the concert series has seen so far, featuring guests from three different continents and such countries as the United States, Austria, Canada, Sweden, Iceland and Benin. The season will be kicked off at the first weekend of September at Jazz Club Monk.
