We Jazz 2016 organised in Helsinki on 4 – 11 December, programme and magazine out now
We Jazz, now organised for the fourth time, is Helsinki’s biggest annual jazz event. This year’s line-up includes American saxophonist Mark Turner and his quartet, saxophonist Logan Richardson with his Finnish confreres, American-German Amok Amor, the Berlin-based vocalist Lucia Cadotch and Norwegian avant-garde trio Huntsville. Among the Finnish artists to take to the stage are Jukka Perko Avara, Dalindèo, Iro Haarla Trio, Mikko Innanen 10+ and Aki Rissanen Trio. A new group Berlin X Helsinki Ensemble, carried out in collaboration with German festival XJazz, sees Finnish and German jazz stars join forces. Known for exploring new concert concepts for jazz, We Jazz 2016 presents a couple of special concerts at the Lapinlahti Hospital, a loft jazz house party and a number of gallery concerts. Nina Mya's venue changes in Kuopio
Having released her third album, the boldly intimate Closure, in July, Nina Mya hits the road on a Finnish Jazz Federation tour on 21 September – 1 October. Along with the new disc, the charismatic and adventurous vocalist presented her new band, comprising such A-listing names as Jukka Eskola, Jori Huhtala, Henri Mäntylä, Petri Puolitaival and Tuomas Timonen.
Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet bring out their debut
Helsinki Soundpost is a strong debut from the trumpeter's stellar outifit. The album is released by German label Ozella Music on 16 September.
Aki Rissanen Trio tours Britain and Finland this September
Led by the eponymous pianist, Aki Rissanen Trio play one show in Britain and five around Finland this September. The trio released the acclaimed disc, Amorandom, earlier this year.
Flame Jazz Messengers Issue Their Debut!
The emerging jazz city Turku's jazz ambassadors, Flame Jazz Messengers, are a new group, assembled inspired by the Flame Jazz -- a concert series and brand that aims to perk up the jazz life of the old capital. The group releases their debut album, Port Arthur, on 9 September, giving an album launch show on 7 September at the brand new G Livelab, in Helsinki.
The multi-artistic production Liikemiehet tour Finland this September
The travelling club series Tuokio sees a special, one-off outfit Liikemiehet give six concerts around Finland. Tuokio is a concept that combines elements of concert tour and public discussion and is produced by the Sivis Study Centre.
Flame Jazz Messengers open the autumn season of Tampereen Työväen Teatteri
Like in previous years, the club will deliver plenty of jazz this season.
We Jazz debuts as a record label with Bowman Trio's first album
The We Jazz Rising Star -winning Bowman Trio is a specimen of the vitality and originality of today's Finnish jazz. Their first album, recorded at a We Jazz Festival concert at Kahvila Sävy in December 2015, will also be the very first release in the catalogue of We Jazz. The album will be available on two different vinyl editions and in digital format. The album launch party takes place on Lonna on 4 September.
The Zenger Brothers star autumn's first Panurama club edition
The Panurama club series, hosted by vibeist Panu Savolainen, returns to Helsinki's Lavaklubi on 2 September.
