The popular Panurama club series, hosted by vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, returns to Lavaklubi, the downstairs club venue of the Finnish National Theatre on 2 September. The new season opens with a bang when the fabulous brothers Zenger join the host on the stage. Dubbed the best beatbox artist of the globe, Felix Zenger has won over fans all over the world. This masterful mouth-drummer’s video has garnered almost 40 million watches on YouTube. His brother Max Zenger, on the other hand, is one of the hottest up-and-coming saxophonists working in the Finnish jazz scene. Together this unlikely trio will no doubt create something unique just for the intimate milieu of Lavaklubi.
Originally, the Panurama club series was launched in spring 2014, and it has been running ever since. Each month, host Panu Savolainen invites a special guest from the vanguard of Finnish music life to join him for a special, one-off concert. Other guests of the autumn season include saxophonist Jukka Perko, vocalist Johanna Iivanainen, guitarist Mikko Iivanainen, violinist Minna Pensola and guitarist Jarmo Saari.
Panu Savolainen (b. 1990) represents the sharpest edge of Finland’s young jazz generation. Perhaps best-known for his European Jazz Competition-winning group HERD, the Lahti native was selected as the Pori Jazz Artist of the Year in 2010. In addition to his career as a professional musician, he has hosted the popular club series HERD and Panurama at the Lavaklubi of the Finnish National Theatre since 2012. He also acts as the Artistic Director of the Kalkkiranta Jazz Festival. 2015 saw Savolainen venture into a new area by compiling the programme for a special concert in honour of composer Toivo Kärki’s 100th anniversary. In the concert Savolainen and his trio fronted five leading Finnish symphony orchestras conducted by Jaakko Kuusisto.
