The ensemble debuted in May 2013, in Lötjönen's Level A degree concert in Sibelius Academy.

The quartet plays Lötjönen's new compositions, a few handpicked cover tracks, and solo double bass improvisation. As the chordal instrument is missing, the double bass gets a new, free-flowing role in the interaction of the backing section and solos. The band emphasizes also the possibilities of a double bass as a soloistic instrument. In his compositions, Lötjönen leaves room for communication between musicians.

In 2017 Quartet East grew into Quintet East as saxophonist Mikko Innanen joined its ranks.
