Skilful jazz bassists are always in demand, especially when they are as multi-skilled and versatile as Ville Huolman (b. 1975) and can master all styles and genres. Huolman grabbed the doublebass for the first time in the Conservatory of Kotka in the beginning of 1990's and was accepted to the jazz department of Sibelius Academy in 1994. Though Huolman hadn't worked on the field for a long time, his talents were noticed: his study collegue trombone player Antti Rissanen asked him to join his band, Mr. Fonebone and in January 1996 Huolman played for the first time with UMO. The first recording for Huolman was also with Mr. Fonebone, on the debut album of the band in 1997. At about the same time saxophone player Jukka Perko and vibist Severi Pyysalo were reforming the comp section of The Poppoo and took Ville Huolman to the bass and Teppo Mäkynen to the drums.

Three years in The Poppoo was an important period for the young bass player. The year 2002 was also fruitful for Huolman: the MP4 Quartet of Mikko Pettinen, where Huolman also influenced, won the international Getxo jazz competition and UMO asked him to share the permanent position in double bass with Pekka Sarmanto. Besides the groovy MP4, Huolman has played and recorded acoustic jazz in Kannaste-Ojajärvi Quartet and a bit different expression with saxophone player Pepa Päivinen's Quartet where, in addition to the doublebass, he playes also electric bass. One of the most recent groups for Huolman has been the new quartet of Manuel Dunkel.

Versatile Ville Huolman has been on Jazz Federation's tour almost every year, for example in 2006 with both Jukka Perko Viisikko and American trumpetist Charles Tolliver's Finnish Jazz Messengers Sextet. The pace of work in smaller groups may be slower because of Huolman's full-time job at UMO since 2006.

Huolman has played, for example, in the bands of Eero Koivistoinen, Otto Donner, Andre Sumelius, Seppo Kantonen, Pekka Pylkkänen, and Jouni Järvelä. In addition to Finnish concert venues (and the Finnish president’s Independence Day reception), Huolman has often performed internationally including festivals in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey. He has toured with Perko-Pyysalo Poppoo in Sweden, Germany, France and Syria, among other places.
