Aki Rissanen Aleatoric and French Impérial Quartet on Free Voices, Free Sounds tour

entry-image

Trio Aleatoric, composed of the pianist Aki Rissanen, the Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen and the drummer Markku Ounaskari, trust the magic of the moment. Impérial Quartet, led by the sax players Damien Sabatier and Gérald Chevillon, belongs to the friskiest newcomers of the French jazz scene. The first stop of the two groups’ double-header tour is at Kanneltalo on 12 March 2015.

The 26th Finnish-French Free Voices, Free Sounds tour kicks off on 12 March with two exciting groups: the Finnish-Belgian Aleatoric and the French Impérial Quartet. The two ensembles will play five concerts together in Kerava, Loimaa, Turku, Salo, Loviisa, Joensuu, Ylivieska, Raahe, Kuopio and Jämsä, and give some shows individually - Aleatoric three, Impérial Quartet five - around Finland. The tour is a co-production of Free Voices/Free Sounds and the Finnish Jazz Federation.

Begun as a duo project between Aki Rissanen and Belgian sax player Robin Verheyen, Aleatoric is a trio that count on the power of improvisation and impulsive creation. The trio is completed by drummer Markku Ounaskari, the latest winner of the Yrjö Prize, which is awarded to an eminent jazz musician by the Finnish Jazz Federation annually. So far, Aki Rissanen Aleatoric have released one self-titled album (2013), which, in keeping with their musical philosophy, was recorded in one day without second or third takes. This is actually at the core of the meaning of "aleatoric" - music born from what appears a paradox; controlled haphazardness. The natural implication is that they are at their best live, where the audience brings along a whole new variable into the picture.

French Impérial Quartet, too, find premeditation and adherence to strict rules alien to their approach. Instead, it is unforced, seamless communication that enables creation. The founding members Damien Sabatier and Gérald Chevillon have played together since their teens, first honing their expression as street musicians, and this long past of playing side by side informs their bold experimentation with new sonic hues. They are backed by the sturdy groove, provided by two A-listing French jazzers, bassist Joachim Florent and drummer Antonin Leymarie, known from several top-notch contemporary jazz ensembles.

Free Voices, Free Sounds, managed by the award-winning producer Charles Gil, has carried the torch of jazz and improvised music since 1996, by developing musical exchange between France, Finland, Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. The main focus is on coordinating tours in Finland and France. A member association of the Finnish Jazz Federation and the AJC, a network of French jazz festivals, the agency collaborates with a wide network of promoters and other players in the field of European jazz.
