Founded in 2021, New 4 originated from jam sessions where the band members brought their own compositions. From the outset, the ensemble's collective performance was exceptionally strong and interactive, bringing music to life and flourishing in a unique way. This energy was soon captured on the band's debut album Direction Zero, released by Eclipse Music in November 2023.

The members of New 4 have each been carving out their careers for about a decade and are known for their involvement in several leading Finnish jazz ensembles. At the core of the band's expression lies a unique musical world created by emotionally powerful compositions and bold improvisation. There's always the possibility of surprise in their music— the band members are capable of breaking the boundaries of song structure and taking improvisation to a uniquely delicate and expressive level.

Compositionally, the band's music seeks to break traditional definitions of modern jazz and explore the intersection of improvisation and composed music from unexpected places. New 4 fearlessly draws influences from today's top modern jazz musicians as well as from popular and classical music, visual arts, and the everyday sounds of the urban environment.
