KYN is an ambitious women’s choir, driven by an impulse to reform the traditional ideas of choral music. One of the best Finnish women’s choirs, KYN tests genre boundaries by including jazz and popular music into their repertoire. This marching to the beat of their own drum has made KYN stand out from other choirs. One of their latest innovations has been “ethnic jazz”, a new genre that they have developed through a number of commissioned works. In addition to their intriguing repertoire, KYN embraces versatility by singing jazz, folk songs, pop and classical music, but always with the same supreme sense of style.
KYN has a mission; to make choral music interesting and approachable to anybody. This is why KYN has chosen to tell stories and aims, first and foremost, at touching their listeners. They have been praised for their fresh interpretations, expressive performances and lively, effortless style reminiscent of vocal ensembles. KYN has been a pioneer in performing with a jazz band, and they frequently collaborate with notable Finnish artists, such as Soile Isokoski, Johanna Försti and Jukka Perko.
Due to their originality, KYN is a sought-after act both in Finland and abroad. In recent years the choir has been seen on stage in France and Taiwan, for instance. KYN has been successful in international competitions and reviews as well; in 2011 they reached the highest level in Tampere Vocal Music Festival, Tampereen Sävel. In July 2014, KYN spread the joy of Finnish women’s choir music by travelling to Riga to participate in The World Choir Games. They competed in the Champion’s Competition, aimed at choirs that have proven themselves proficient in international competitions and festivals. By reaching the highest of the four score categories (80.01-100 points), KYN returned home with a gold medal in their pocket.
