Joona Toivanen Trio – formed by pianist Joona Toivanen, bassist Tapani Toivanen and drummer Olavi Louhivuori - has a skilful grip on the art of improvisation and know how to deliver a great mix of original compositions with superb musicianship. The music of Joona Toivanen Trio is considered lyrical and elegant but equally strongly individual and daring and has its genesis in the Finnish nature and draws from the its rich epic and folk tradition.
Active since 1997, the ambitious threesome have an unassuming and natural attitude to their playing, and today are considered one of the most internationally successful young jazz groups in Finland. They have performed in Europe, Australia and Asia at key festivals and exotic music spots, and are enjoying a wonderful reception wherever they go. The trio’s album was named XX for their 20th anniversary year. The critically acclaimed album was also granted with the Teosto award.
Joona Toivanen Trio’s latest record, Both Only (2022, We Jazz Records) is the seventh album of the ensemble. The band has never sounded as united as on Both Only and presents the trio's most cohesive work. Its melancholic songs also leave room for free improvisation, while modern compositions paint long arcs and present new tones to the minimalist, acoustic expression characteristic of the band.
