Elena Mindru Finnection (previously Elena & The Rom Ensemble) is a group led by the jazz vocalist Elena Mindru. Their original sound has quickly won over both critics and audiences. The group's repertory is mainly composed of pieces written by Mindru.
Internationally recognized jazz singer Elena Mindru has enlivened the Finnish music stage for almost a decade with her charismatic performance. Mindru won second place and an audience award at the Shure Voice Competition in Montreux, Switzerland in 2012, and got to meet legendary producer Quincy Jones. Mindru has created an international career from Finland that has taken her to perform around the world as a soloist with symphony orchestras and big bands. Mindru has also released three albums under her own name, and the fourth will be released in the spring of 2021.
The band Elena Mindru Finnection symbolizes the connection with Finnish musicians, who act as the band's main driving forces. Its soloist guest in 2021 will be Adam Baldych, one of Europe's best-known jazz violinists. Pianist Tuomas J. Turunen is responsible for the band's compositions together with Mindru. The talented musicians Oskari Siirtola and Anssi Tirkkonen of the young generation form the band’s rhythm section.
The band’s new album, which will be released in 2021, contains songs whose lyrics deal with the future prospects of humanity in a changing ecological environment as well as the challenges posed by globalization. The lyrics paint dreamlike foreshadows of a future that looks threatening, but that also brings people together to appreciate and nurture our unique living environment. The message of the album is to bring hope for the future, even in the midst of a variety of threats, and about how hope and banding together can save our shared planet.
For Elena Mindru, the music in the new album will be a step towards a more vocal and melodic expression. As part of the band's live performances, Mindru will use various effects and loopers in addition to the traditional enhanced vocal sound. The collaboration with Baldych has been going on for two years now and has proven to be very fruitful. Baldych's violin brings his own personal touch to the band's music and acts as a luminous soloist alongside Mindru and other band members.
