sami-linna

Sami Linna (b. 1974) is an active all-around jazzguy who has had time both play the guitar, work as a trustee in several music organizations and teach guitar in many institutions. Linna graduated from the jazz department of Sibelius Academy in 2006 but he has also a degree in musicpedagogy from Stadia University of Applied Sciences. Currently Linna is finishing his doctoral thesis on combining tonality and modality in jazzperformance.

Unit 6, the band formed in fall 1996, is the most long-lasting band of Linna: during the years group has had time to tour twice around Finland and perform several times abroad. The other group of the guitarist, Sami Linna Quartet, has also been working for long. The music of this group draws it's influences from the guitarjazz tradition of 1950's and 1960's and Linna's own sound in the band is also traditional in a tasty way.

As a sideman Linna has played in several groups, such as UMO Jazz Orchestra and the groups of Jari Perkiömäki, Jukkis Uotila and Eero Koivistoinen. In recent years one important musical partner has also been organ player Giorgos Kontrafouris.

Besides his work as a guitarist and a trustee, Linna has been teaching guitar in Pop & Jazz Conservatory, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Sibelius Academy. In the organizations of music and jazz Linna has worked both as the chairman of the Jazzmusicians' association and as a member of the board of the Finnish Jazz Federation.
