Lonna, one of the coastal islands of Helsinki, will play host to a new concert series, organised by We Jazz and featuring some of the best Finnish jazz acts and the We Jazz DJ collective. Each edition will be opened by a live broadcast of the popular Jazz kiinnostaa radio programme, running on Radio Helsinki. The concert series will kick off on 12 June with Jukka Eskola Soul Trio giving an EP launching show.
We Jazz, one of the pioneering players of the Finnish jazz scene, launches a new summery concert series on the coastal island, Lonna. Taking place on Sundays from mid-June to early September, each edition will see a top-notch jazz act take to the stage, the Jazz kiinnostaa radio programme transmitted live from the spot, and the We Jazz DJs spinning records. The concert series will kick off on 12 June with Jukka Eskola Soul Trio celebrating their new EP on stage. Other acts to play on Lonna over the summer include Jukka Perko Avara; drummer Teppo Mäkynen’s new trio 3TM; M.A. Numminen & Uusrahvaanomainen Jatsiorkesteri; Eero Koivistoinen Quartet and Aili Ikonen.
“We gave Lonna a go last summer, successfully, which gave us courage to expand the concept remarkably,” says Matti Nives, Artistic Director for We Jazz, and co-host of the radio show Jazz kiinnostaa. “With our fairly versatile summer Sunday menu – a live radio show, a live concert and DJ sets – we hope to offer something for every fan of jazz.”
As the radio show, Jazz kiinnostaa, runs on Sunday afternoons it provides a nice and easy start for the event. Hosts Nives and Teppo Mäkynen will invite performers to talk about their careers and share their ideas about jazz before the live concerts.
The concert series takes place at Lonna’s new terrace, or, should the weather prove unfavourable, inside the atmospheric, historical brick warehouses. Tickets are now available for purchase on Tiketti, and in addition to single tickets there are family and season options on offer, as well. Lonna can be reached by ferry in less than than ten minutes from the Market Square. The service is operated by JT Lines.
