Starting from 1 September , Töölö’s Bar Favela will be turned into a jazz club again. The Tiistaijatsit (Tuesday Jazz) club series is hosted by Mikko Innanen who has invited a number of friends – Finnish and international – to take the stage with him on the first Tuesday of each month.
This time Innanen has called together four different groups to perform at the venue, situated in Mechelininkatu, in the heart of the neighbourhood of Töölö. In addition to the host himself, the concerts feature such household names of Finnish jazz as drummer Reiska Laine, bassists Uffe Krokfors and Eero Tikkanen, trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and pianist Aki Rissanen. Two international guests will also appear on stage: Swiss drummer David Meier and Lithuanian sax player Liudas Mockūnas.
The first edition of the club series took place last spring. “As a Töölö-resident, I felt that this area was in need of some livening up. Once Bar Favela opened its doors, it became my favourite haunt with its cosy living-room atmosphere, friendly staff, heterogeneous clientele and tasty and affordable food and drinks. Soon it occurred to me that the place would provide a perfect venue for acoustic jazz”, says Innanen. “It was a joy to have so many people participate in the club nights of the spring, and I hope that the audience will find us this autumn in such ample numbers, too.”
Yrjö-awarded saxophonist and composer Mikko Innanen (37), performs regularly in Finland and abroad with his own groups and collaborates actively with a number of international top artists. On his latest album, Song For A New Decade, released on TUM Records, he plays with American bassist William Parker and drummer Andrew Cyrille. The album has been noted widely in international jazz media, including the jazz bible Down Beat.
Tiistaijatsit (Tuesday Jazz) club takes place at Bar Favela on the first Tuesday of the month from September to December.
