Kalle Salonen to host a club series this summer

entry-image

The Hammond wizard Kalle Salonen invites a number of great pop and jazz musicians to join him at the terrace of Elmun Baari, at rock club Nosturi, in Helsinki, this summer in the framework of a new club series. The club runs from June to August, seeing Salonen perform with fine guests from the vanguard of Finnish music.

In the respective editions, the stage will be taken by Eero Raittinen, the grand old man of rock’n’roll; Sami Nieminen, the other half of the duo Nieminen & Litmanen; Niko Ahvonen, a fixed star in the sky of Finnish soul; Marko Haavisto, a strong voice of the melancholy schlager; and Jukka Gustavson, a pioneer of Finnish prog rock.

Each edition begins at 3:00PM with Kalle Salonen Band’s own set. The band plays their original material for an hour after which the host will invite the guest to join them on the stage. All concerts are free.

Elmun Baari, located in Telakkakatu 8, offers a lovely marine milieu for an afternoon of live music. Should the weather be unfavourable, the concerts take place inside the Elmun Baari club.

The club series is organised in partnership with Radio Helsinki, Lyhty ry, Clarksdale Communications and Elmun Baari.

Being one of the few artists with a developmental disability who compose their music by themselves Kalle Salonen is an exceptional figure in the history of Finnish popular music. Salonen rehearses at Kulttuuripaja Valo, known as the headquarters of Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, the Finnish representative in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. A key aim of Lyhty ry is to further the status and rights of disabled people in Finnish society. Cat Slide, the debut of Kalle Salonen Band, came out on Texicalli Records in 2013, and the group has already performed at a number of renowned jazz and pop festivals, clubs and on the TV and the radio.
