Jaska Lukkarinen Trio

Jaska Lukkarinen Trio, founded in 2005, is known for its energetic live performances and impressive ensemble work. In addition to Jaska Lukkarinen, the trio includes top talents from the Finnish jazz scene, Jussi Kannaste, and Antti Lötjönen.

The trio incorporates diverse influences, blending the rhythm and harmony of American jazz tradition with the expressive sound of European jazz. As a saxophone trio, the ensemble offers various possibilities for musical variation through compositions and improvisation. The trio draws inspiration from the trio recordings of artists like Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins, who have explored the format with similar line-ups. The absence of a traditional harmony instrument in the saxophone trio and the resulting minimalist sound were fundamental considerations when establishing the group.

Up to this point, the trio has released three albums: the Emma Award-nominated Trane Ear (2008), Neutral Terrain (2011), and Origami (2017). Their fourth album, Textures, is set to be released in the spring of 2024.

Central to the diverse and virtuosic trio's work is their ensemble spirit. The trio views themselves as one instrument formed by three individuals, emphasizing a thoughtful approach to their music. "Our chemistry as three individuals is certainly visible in our performances. We are friends and similar people both on and off the stage. I believe that this serves what we are trying to convey to the audience," Lukkarinen explains.
