Ilmari Rönkä Textures is a new jazz ensemble that performs Finnish-language music composed by saxophonist-flutist Ilmari Rönkä and lyricist-singer Riikka Keränen. In addition to Rönkä and Keränen, the band features double bassist Juuso Rinta and guitarist Héctor Lepe. The band's songs utilize a texture-based writing style, rare for small jazz ensembles, resulting in a unique and warm group sound. The members of this chamber music-like ensemble are all powerful soloists, bringing a strong rhythmic twist to the soft tones.
The band's music is approachable, sung jazz that allows for improvisation and unpredictability. Ilmari Rönkä plays alto and soprano saxophones as well as the flute, an instrument rarely heard in Finnish jazz music.
