Big Blue is a jazz ensemble formed by four young Finnish musicians originally in Jyväskylä in the early years of the 21st century. This group, true to its name, explores undiscovered sonic landscapes eyes open and with a delicate meditativeness – indeed, the group has always played the role of a musical laboratory for its members who can be encountered today in the jazz scenes of Helsinki and Berlin.

The musicians are known from several groups, such as The Northern Governors, Sun Trio, Kvalda, Auteur Jazz and Vibraltar. In spring 2010, after seeing many phases including renaming themselves from “Myöhä” to “Big Blue”, the group recorded their eponymous debut which was released by the esteemed Italian jazz record company, Cam Jazz. The compositions penned by the members are quietly intense, pensive modern jazz in which a presence of the open horizon and the sweep of boreal wind can be felt. “Big Blue” invites interpretation. Cam Jazz brought out also Big Blue’s sophomore, Strange Wonder (2013), and the “spin-off” Little Blue’s eponymous 2012 album that consists of Louhivuori and Kujanpää’s duo performances.

During its existence, Big Blue has toured in both Finland and Europe on many occasions. In February 2012 the band performed at the renowned 12 Points! Festival, organised that year in Porto, Portugal. They have also participated in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets qualification round in Finland and prestigious the Getxo Jazz Contest in Spain.
