Accordeonist Veli Kujala ( b. 1976) graduated from music performance programme of Sibelius Academy in 2004 and won while still studying several accordeon competitions both in Finland and abroad. As a composer he has come in second in the composition contest of London Accordeon Festival in 2001 and won the Vote of the Audience Prize of Bryssel Jazz Orchestra in 2003. Kujala has also performed with several classical music orchestras such as the Chamber Music Orchestra of Middle-Osterbothnia, Avanti!, Pori Sinfonietta and as a soloist for the Dutch Ensemble Insomnio.
In the field of rhythm music Kujala has performed with Gourmet and Pekka Pohjola Acoustic Band. In the summer of 2005 Kujala played the accordeon in Iro Haarla's Fingo Orchestra that performed Edward Vesala's tangos and in the same spring he interpreted the music of Frank Zappa on the Sweden-tour of Ensemble Ambrosius.
In fall 2000 Kujala formed Pipoka together with guitarist Jarmo Julkunen. Pipoka performs the original compositions of the leader duo and unique arrangements of Brazilian and Argentinian music. The group itself calls its music Brazilian-Ugrian chamber jazz. The debut album Pipoka (Rockadillo 2004), that was released as a solo album of Kujala, got great feedback both from the critics and the experts of accordeon music.
