Timo Hirvonen (b. 1977) has so far left the double bass for his collegues but as an electric bass player he is definitely the most important master of the younger generation. In his hometown Iisalmi Hirvonen started his music studies with electric organs but changed the keyboards into a bass guitar in the age of 14 and after high school he studied for a couple of years at the pop/jazz department of Kuopio Conservatory. In fall 2000 Hirvonen started his studies at the jazz department of Sibelius Academy and graduated with a Master's degree in five years, in 2005, and was thus awarded with the Sibelius Academy Dig Grant.

One of Hirvonen's first groups in Helsinki was Pessi Levanto's Burn! that performed actively as the houseband of Rytmihäiriöklubi in Juttutupa. In 2002 Jukkis Uotila asked Hirvonen to join his Funkfunters-band and a trio with Wayne Krantz that did a small tour in Finland the same year. Hirvonen has said that especially Funkhunters was a pivotal experience for him.

In 2003 Hirvonen formed a tribute project with drummer Jussi Lehtonen for the legend of electric bass, Jaco Pastorius. This 9-member In the Spirit of Jaco Pastorius performed talented arrangements of the Jaco's classic compositions and the band's Jazz Federation's tour in April 2004 was a huge success. Hirvonen, Lehtonen and guitarist Teemu Viinikainen have done co-operation also on Viinikainen's debutalbum Tales of Robert Dickson that was released in 2005. The same year Hirvonen formed also his own group High Five! whose repertoire was totally composed by the bass player.

Hirvonen is an electric bass specialist and a swinging master that has an absorbing and irresistible style with an unique expression. Besides active performing, Hirvonen organizes the Koko Jazz Club with Jussi Lehtonen at Koko Theatre.
