It was not until 1990s when Reija Lang (b. 1963) got really interested in jazz singing, but quickly she developed into an interesting and fresh voice on the field of Finnish jazz vocalists. Lang studied singing in the Pop & Jazz Conservatory and the open university of Sibelius Academy and the hard work and training paid off: Lang won the Lady Summertime singing contest in summer 2002. She has also participated in jazz workshops i.a. in Amsterdam and New York and studied under the American crooner legend Mark Murphy.
In 2001 Lang met violinist Mikko-Ville Luolajan-Mikkola with whom she formed her first own band. The rhythm section of the band was formed by pianist Kari Ikonen, bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Mikko Hassinen. The quintet started to work with repertoire consisting of instrumental compositions from the 1960s that Lang had written lyrics for. The alto voice of the singer, brave interpretation and the energetic group work of the band formed an unique package that brought a fresh addition to the field of Finnish vocal jazz.
Lang's interpretation has been heavily influenced by different jazzmusicians from Ella Fitzgerald to John Zorn. Besides Lang & Luolajan-Mikkola, Lang has been singing in her own Zoga trio and as a soloist for the Helsinki Swing Band. One long-lasting musical partner for Lang has been Mika Mylläri who arranged Lang's translated songs for the big band of the Finnish National Opera in fall 2004 and who also plays in Lang's British-Finnish Burn Out Mama group.
