Janne Murto (b. 1964) arrived to the field of Finnish jazz through the Pop & Jazz Conservatory and the jazz department of Sibelius Academy. He gained big band experience in Espoo Big Band, Upi Sorvali Big Bad Familyssa and most of all in UMO Jazz Orchestra where Murto played the whole 1990s. Murto graduated from the Sibelius Academy with a Master's degree in 1995 and performed in the mid-1990s with Avanti!. The cooperation with the chamber orchestra continued till the end of the decade and Murto played also on the recording of Avanti! I Was Lookin at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky (Nonesuch 1998).

Murto's own band in the 1990s was called Läpimurto, including vibist Severi Pyysalo, pianist Seppo Kantonen, bassist Tuure Koski and drummer Marko Timonen. The quintet did a Finnish Jazz Federation's tour in 1996 but it didn't release any albums. In the late-1990s the saxophone quartet Saxperiment however released their debut album Saxperiment in 1997 that was produced by Murto. Later Murto has had some projects, for example on the field of Latin music.

The biggest explination why Murto has been less active on the field of jazz in the recent years is the post as the headmaster of the Pop & Jazz Conservatory that Murto has kept since 2000. Murto has been an effective and liked headmaster and also worked actively as an actor on the field of Finnish jazz field. He has worked i.a. as the chairman of the Freelancemusicians' Association and mainly thanks to the effectiveness of Murto, the Rhythm music vision 2010, an official plan for the future of the Finnish jazz and rhythm music field, was formed in 2005.
